In the middle of his life, Carl Jung famously asked himself the question, “What myth do you live by?” He had no answer. Myth offers a person a transcendent orientation for living a meaningful life, and Jung found that traditional religion had failed him in this regard. Religions have historically provided such myths for the orientation of people, but modern rationality and materialistic scientific assumptions about reality have largely cancelled this option. This has left many people in Jung’s predicament. Jung found a way to the recovery of myth. In these lectures, I will address the question: Can Jungian psychology suggest a way for individuals and communities today to find a myth to live by?
