The C.G. Jung Memorial Lecture: The Dystopian Mind in a Traumatized World: Cultural Complexes and the Creative Unconscious in Troubled Times with Thomas Singer

This is our Jung Memorial Lecture. Around the world Jung Societies, Centers and Institutes do Memorial Lectures to commemorate the death of Jung on June 6, 1961. We seek a world-known, senior analyst to do this lecture and we have been fortunate to have Thomas Singer this year. His work is complex and satisfying. We are delighted to welcome him for this special occasion. 

Over the past three decades, Dr. Thomas Singer has been exploring themes related to the collective psyche and cultural complexes.  These themes come alive and are potent both in the individual and in groups, and have currently gripped our political processes with a vengeance.  

In his talk, Dr. Singer will explore how a dystopian mood has taken hold of the world and what might break its stranglehold on our capacity to imagine a better future, or any future at all.

Thomas Singer, M.D., is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst in private practice in San Francisco. Dr. Singer’s newest book is entitled Mind of State:  Conversations on the Psychological Conflicts Stirring U.S. Politics and Society which has been co-edited with fellow contributors to The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump.   Dr. Singer is the editor of a series of books which explore cultural complexes in different parts of the world, including Australia, Latin America, Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.  In addition, he has edited Psyche and the City, The Vision Thing, co-edited the Ancient Greece, Modern Psyche series and co-authored A Fan's Guide to Baseball Fever. Dr. Singer currently serves as the President of National ARAS which explores symbolic imagery from around the world.
