"The starry vault of heaven is in truth the open book of cosmic projection, in which are reflected the mythologems, i.e., the archetypes. In this vision astrology and alchemy, the two classical functionaries of the psychology of the collective unconscious, join hands."
- C.G. Jung
In this three-part course, we will explore in greater detail aspects of the life of C.G. Jung, based on the planetary configurations in his astrological chart. We will see how the planetary configurations themselves gave rise to the events.
Class 1
· Early life, medical education, death of father, seances and the paranormal
· Professional life: Employment at Burgholzhi, the association experiment and Sigmund Freud’s theories, his relationship and enmity with Eugen Bleuler
· Marriage to Emma Rauschenbach, an heiress of great wealth, and the birth of their children
· Relationship with Sabina Spielrein, his patient who later becomes a psychoanalyst
· Beginning of international recognition
Class 2
· Rumors of his infidelity; Emma threatens divorce and demands that he leave the Burgholzhi “fish bowl”
· Meeting with Freud, admission into the inner sanctum
· Development of the theory of archetypes while treating a controversial patient
· Freud’s visit to Zurich, their trip to Clark University in America with Sandor Ferenczi, break-up with Freud; Bleuler demands Jung’s resignation
· Description of American culture as “fascinating”
· Arrival of Toni Wolfe
Class 3
· Purchase of land in Bollingen where he builds his Tower; death of his mother
· Travels in the United States, England, France, Holland, Germany, Africa
· Intense study of comparative histories, cultures, societies, and religions; begins his interpretation of the human psyche based on the collective unconscious and alchemical symbolism
· Arrival of a new group of students in Zurich, including Marie-Louise von Franz
· Developing interest in alchemy, the “inner figures”; discovery that the personal was really anchored in a long historical tradition and that mythology had not given him the answers he sought
· Becoming “dangerously famous”
Jung wanted his patients to experience and integrate suffering into their lives, to accept the sorrow and the darkness, for otherwise there is no life.
