Course meets on April 2nd, 9th and 16th, 2025
This program WILL NOT BE recorded.
In these times of unique planetary alignment, great change and disruption are taking place on Earth, potentially overwhelming us with a sense of terror, helplessness, and collapse. The tension of the opposites and the death/rebirth model can be found in several myths and fairytales with sisters working together to bring about transformation. These stories encourage and inspire us to find a collaborative relationship with the middle-way forward and to unearth new possibilities.
In this course, we will use the Nordic fairytale Tatterhood to explore the barren kingdom and the birth of the inner activist and the mystic. Tatterhood is a female figure who is born riding a goat and carrying a spoon. Although reportedly ugly and hooded, she emerges with unwavering energy, force, and determination that disappoints her mother, defies challenging figures, and disrupts social constructs. Despite her unconventionality, Tatterhood is faithfully companioned by her beautiful sister as they work together towards an unknown future and a surprising conclusion.
Throughout the course, we will actively consider several key figures and motifs that facilitate the movement of psychic energy, while acknowledging the role of trust, curiosity, and faith found in the pairing of the inner activist and the mystic. How might these two primary energies facilitate a becoming within the psyche so that the inner lands, with their various shadow figures, are redeemed through the generative energies of play and wonder? How might Tatterhood help us stir our psychic energy enough to leave behind old ideas, attitudes, and beliefs? Can Jung’s ideas about typology and alchemy provide useful metaphors and images? Through creative means, we will then listen to an inner knowing that supports a collaborative and relational possibility for the desired and necessary transformation.
Please bring the art materials of your choice (see supply list below for ideas), paper, and a journal for active imagination and spontaneous writing. No need to be an artist to participate. Each session will focus on specific elements from the tale, followed by prompts that will facilitate your own personal exploration of Tatterhood.
