FREE (OR WITH DONATION) ADMISSION
This program will be recorded.
The Jung Society of Washington is delighted to welcome this year’s Free Fundraiser lecture with world-renowned Jung scholar and author Sonu Shamdasani, whose groundbreaking work has transformed contemporary understanding of the life and writings of Jung. This year’s lecture offers a fascinating glimpse into the formative years of Jung’s clinical and psychological work. Long before Jung became the towering figure many of us know through his later writings, he was a young doctor entering the halls of the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital, confronting firsthand the realities of mental illness, human suffering, and the mysteries of the psyche. This presentation invites us into that early world and into the beginnings of ideas that would shape analytical psychology for generations to come.
As in the past we are offering this event free to anyone who feels a need for a gift. If this is you, please join us as our guest. On the other hand, if you are in a position to support the work of the Jung Society of Washington, we gratefully welcome your donation. This year we have a fundraising goal of $7,500. We think it is modest in a year of economic constraints and political upheaval, and it will help us to continue to provide support to people who cannot afford our programs.
We are especially excited to share two new additions to this year’s fundraiser.
First, any gift of $100 or more will automatically include an annual membership to the Jung Society of Washington community. Membership offers discounted rates for all programs throughout the year, exclusive borrowing access to our library, private access to recordings of programs featuring leading Jungian analysts, and invitations to special members-only events. This is a deal. You will quickly recoup the cost of the contribution through the reduced prices of our courses.
We also want to acknowledge with deep affection the anonymous donor who has generously agreed to match every gift made during this fundraiser, doubling the impact of your contribution.
Please know that every donation, large or small, truly matters. In fact, every year it is often one modest final donation that allows us to meet, or even surpass, our fundraising goal. If you have ever wondered whether your contribution makes a difference, we hope you will remember that every dollar counts, and this year every dollar will be matched. Your generosity helps us continue to provide meaningful programming, support our lecturers and scholars, and offer scholarships to those seeking to study Jung's analytical psychology.
Most of all, thank you for your continuing generosity and support. We know these are difficult and uncertain times both at home and in the wider world, and we do not take this community for granted. We feel very fortunate indeed to be able to gather, sharing these programs, and sustaining a space for deep reflection, and meaningful dialogue. We hope you will join us for this rich, thought-provoking evening.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In 1900, Jung entered the cloistered world of the Burghölzli, where he sought to uncover ‘what actually takes place inside the mentally ill.’ This presentation provides a preview of the Volume 2 of the forthcoming Critical Edition of the Works of C.G. Jung, reconstructing the world Jung found himself in, the patients he was confronted with, and how this shaped his methods of clinical observation, psychological research and therapeutics, leading to the dawning recognition that ‘In insanity, we do not discover anything new and unknown; we are looking at the foundations of our own being.’
Sonu Shamdasani is Vice-Dean (Health), Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Co-Director of the Health Humanities Centre and Professor of Jung History at University College London. He is the General Editor of The Critical Edition of the Works of C.G. Jung and author and editor of many books.
