As we approach the end of life, meaning and purpose are as important to us as they were when we were young. Jung believed that life is teleology, or that life is always striving for a goal. In youth, the goal is working toward achievement, relationship, individuation. It is a movement toward the summit.
With the same intensity that the natural drive of the young is toward ascent, the natural drive of older people is descent; the natural goal is toward repose. In Jung’s view, fear of death is as problematic for the elderly as fear of life is for the young.
In this group of novels, we will explore meaning and purpose in old age. We will read the following novels:
I’m looking forward to seeing you.
