Imaginal Seeing and Knowing: A Workshop With John Hayes

In this workshop we will differentiate sensory and intellectual knowing from imaginal knowing as described by Carl Jung, James Hillman and Henry Corbin, and show how these ideas are robustly supported by contemporary neuroscience in the work of Vladimir Miskovic and Steven Jay Lynn, as well as Iain McGilchrist.

Participants will then engage in exercises in imaginal seeing and knowing and in active imagination, which can open us to the deeper psyche. Jung would describe this opening as the transcendent function, the vehicle that fosters individuation.

John Michael Hayes is a Jungian analyst who has had a long and varied career as a psychologist/psychoanalyst in the Baltimore-Washington area. He is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Faculty and Training and Supervising Analyst at Washington Baltimore Psychoanalytic Institute. He also serves on the faculty and is Dean of Candidates at the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association (NY). John also holds degrees in theology and is a priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. His private analytic practice is in Baltimore.
