Western man has retained fewer and fewer ways to be initiated into his own psychic nature; initiation therefore became one of Jung‘s main concerns in psychotherapy: initiation into the repressed unconscious nature, which is fundamental to any healing. Now this is a view of psychotherapy in which Hermes, as the archetype of the unconscious, is the guide, most of the time the only guide.
--Rafael López-Perdraza, Hermes and his Children
The contemporary fixation on hypermasculinity—visible in parts of the manosphere and in renewed fascination with the male warrior-hero—raises a psychological question: What do we mean when we speak of “the masculine”? How might we understand masculine and feminine as symbolic poles of psychic experience rather than fixed attributes of men and women?
Taking the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy’s evocative phrase, “a new phase of eros,” as our point of departure, this four-part course explores the masculine as a symbolic and psychological process. Through Jungian psychology, poetry, myth, and contemporary film and television, we will consider eros and gender fluidity, embodiment and relationships between men, aggression and archetypal possession, vulnerability, shame, and shadow.
Throughout the course, Rafael López-Pedraza’s image of Hermes as guide into unconscious psychic nature will accompany our inquiry. What might initiation into previously unconscious aspects of ourselves mean for contemporary masculinity—and what may happen when such an initiation fails to take place?
