This course invites participants to a careful, sustained reading of C.G. Jung’s Two Essays on Analytical Psychology (CW7). Few texts offer as clear or as rich an introduction to Jung’s mature psychology, and this volume serves as an ideal entry point to the entire Collected Works. Written and substantially revised over several decades, the text traces Jung’s movement beyond Freud and Adler toward his distinctive vision of psychic energy (libido), typology, the personal and collective unconscious, archetypes, transference, persona, anima/animus, active imagination, and individuation.
Each session will weave together a close reading of Jung’s argument with a lively discussion of its implications for psychological development, analytic practice, dream work, symbolic life, and the ever-present challenge of becoming oneself. Throughout, we will understand individuation as the ego’s evolving relationship to the unconscious. A central question will guide us: How does the ego learn to relate to the unconscious without repressing it, reducing it, being overwhelmed by it, or identifying with it?
The course traces a remarkable arc. At first, the unconscious emerges as a problem—a domain of repression, sexuality, power, and neurosis. It then opens into something far larger: a symbolic and archetypal field rich in meaning. Jung then sounds a note of caution, warning of the very real dangers of premature or unconscious identification with this deeper dimension. Finally, he presents individuation as the demanding and rewarding art of entering into a conscious, ethical, and symbolically alive relationship with the unconscious.

Kenneth James, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Chicago. He is the founder and director of The Soulwork Center, dedicated to facilitating the process of individuation according to the teachings of C.G. Jung and other contributors to the field of Analytical Psychology. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Along the way, he studied voice at the American Conservatory of Music and music therapy at the Institute for Consciousness and Music in Baltimore. He also completed four years of post-doctoral study in theology and scripture at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He has taken lay ordination in Zen Buddhism and has studied the Kabbalah with a Lubavitcher rabbi in Chicago. Ken’s studies of the Tarot began at an early age when he was introduced to the notion of divination by an elderly aunt from Scotland. He has led workshops around the world on the relationship between divination and synchronicity, and on the use of the Tarot to explore the unconscious. The synthesis of Jungian thought, clinical practice, and the numinous has been a strong motif throughout his career.
