This program WILL BE recorded.
This course will meet on Tuesdays on July 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd, 2025.
This course invites participants to engage deeply with two of Jung’s most vital tools for psychological development: dream work and active imagination. Both serve as intimate companions on the journey of individuation, offering guidance, insight, and transformation from the depths of the unconscious.
Together, we will explore how to recall and record dreams with care and consistency, cultivating a written corpus that reveals the unfolding narrative of the psyche over time. Jung viewed dreams not merely as symbols to decode but as living expressions of unconscious processes that carry their own healing potential. In this spirit, we will approach dream images with reverence and curiosity, learning how they offer both diagnosis and medicine for the soul.
Participants will be introduced to a range of interpretive strategies, including reductive and synthetic approaches to dream work, as well as the objective and subjective dimensions of dream imagery. We will also explore the essential practice of “dreaming the dream onward”—a bridge to the method of active imagination, which Jung described as a way of consciously continuing the dialogue with the unconscious.
Building on the foundational work of C.G. Jung, the course will incorporate approaches to active imagination developed by Verena Kast, Robert Johnson, Barbara Hannah, and others. Participants will learn practical techniques for entering into dialogue with inner figures, images, and moods, both within and beyond the classroom setting. Opportunities for in-class practice will be offered, along with supportive discussions of experiences that arise between sessions.
Participants are welcome to bring their own dreams for exploration during the course, and the instructor may share selected dreams from clinical practice. However, all sharing—of dreams or active imagination material—is entirely voluntary and held within a respectful and confidential space.
Join us in this dynamic exploration of the inner world, where the dream and the image become trusted companions in the lifelong unfolding of the Self.

Kenneth James, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Chicago. He is the founder and director of The Soulwork Center, dedicated to facilitating the process of individuation according to the teachings of C.G. Jung and other contributors to the field of Analytical Psychology. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Along the way, he studied voice at the American Conservatory of Music and music therapy at the Institute for Consciousness and Music in Baltimore. He also completed four years of post-doctoral study in theology and scripture at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He has taken lay ordination in Zen Buddhism and has studied the Kabbalah with a Lubavitcher rabbi in Chicago. Ken’s studies of the Tarot began at an early age when he was introduced to the notion of divination by an elderly aunt from Scotland. He has led workshops around the world on the relationship between divination and synchronicity, and on the use of the Tarot to explore the unconscious. The synthesis of Jungian thought, clinical practice, and the numinous has been a strong motif throughout his career. |
